Govt releases 8,200 tonnes of raw sugar for export

New Delhi, 29th July (PTI): The government on Tuesday released 8,200 tonnes of raw sugar from the free sale quota of 2007-2008 season for export to the US.

In a notification issued today, the Director General of Foreign Trade said it has allocated 8,200 tonnes of raw sugar from the free sale quota of 2007-08 (October 2007- September 2008) for exports of tariff rate quota to US.

Indian Sugar Exim Corp Ltd is the designated agency for export of sugar to the US under preferential quota.

Meanwhile, the sugar export in 2007-08 season has already crossed 35 lakh tonnes and is expected to reach 40 lakh tonnes by September when the season ends. Of the 35 lakh tonnes of sugar that has been exported, over 22 lakh tonnes was raw sugar while the remaining 13 lakh tonnes was white sugar.

In 2006-07 season, the country exported about 17 lakh tonnes of sugar. Sugar season runs from October-September.

The government is providing assistance to the sugar mills to liquidate the surplus sugar in the overseas markets.

Sugar industry is facing a glut from 2006-07 season. Sugar production stood at 283 lakh tonnes in 2006-07 while it is estimated to touch 267 lakh tonnes in the current season.
